At least 98 reported cases of salmonellosis in Germany, Austria and Denmark at the end of September were traced back to contaminated rocket salad.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) had provided information on the food-borne salmonellosis outbreak in its Epidemiological Bulletin on 26 September. After campylobacter bacteria, salmonella are the most common bacterial cause of intestinal diseases in Germany.

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) took this incident as an opportunity to publish an updated consumer information sheet on food-borne salmonella.

Plant-based foods can be contaminated with salmonella as early as the field through fertilisation with manure or slurry. They should therefore always be thoroughly washed before consumption
